Arrested Fort Myers Uber Driver with criminal record passed background check

We recently wrote about Fort Myers Uber driver Felix Torres who was arrested after allegedly sexually assaulting a passenger. According to a report by WFTX Fox 4, Torres has a violet criminal history with a rap sheet including arrests for breaking and entering and armed robbery. Despite his unlawful past, Torres passed Uber’s background check. This in turn resulted in a passenger suffering a violent attack that changed her life forever.

The issue with Uber’s background check is that it screens specifically for convictions and not charges resulting in an arrest. While Torres’ arrest records included violent crimes, no convictions are present. Considering the nature of his arrest record, red flags should have been raised over Torres’ suitability as an Uber driver.

While Uber often states customer safety is a priority, this case illustrates that in reality, they are simply concerned with the bottom line. Time and again companies such as Uber and Lyft put profits first, leaving their customers to suffer the consequences.
