Uber Driver in Boulder, CO, Mark Saunders Accused of Sexually Assaulting Passenger

On Thursday, January 2, 2020, Mark Saunders, an Uber Driver in Boulder, CO, was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and unlawful sexual contact. Saunders is scheduled for a formal filing of charges on Tuesday, January 7.

According to the arrest affidavit, on February 18, 2018 a woman called Boulder police stating she believed she had been sexually assaulted. According to the woman, she had been out drinking with a friend the previous night before calling an Uber driver to take her home.

The woman stated that she did not remember most of the evening, but did recall flashes of Saunders on top of her. When she woke up the next morning, she was wearing only a T-shirt and her tampon had been removed. When the police took the woman to receive a sexual assault examination, the presence of male DNA was discovered.

The woman’s roommate told police the woman came into his room the night of February 18th, and appeared “very out of it”. He also stated she spoke about a man in her room. The roommate saw a man matching Saunders’ description in their home. Records revealed Saunders was not only the woman’s Uber driver, but there was also a a text from his number on her phone. The police continued to monitor subsequent text messages between the woman and Saunders.

When Boulder Police tried to contact Saunders for an interview and a DNA sample, he never responded. However, the DNA from the sexual assault examination matched a sample Saunders had given to police in Florida after an arrest in which he was later dismissed.
